That's an awful read. Well, it's well written, but it's awful that happened and happens.

I do have one question: back in the 1900 whatevers, was it common for big age gaps? It doesn't make it okay, but I wonder if it was generally accepted.

YES! I’m so glad you brought that up - so that was a part of my longer piece. (I edited it because it felt like a moot point.) But very common, and not unusual for teenagers to be wed at that time. Looking at their marriage certificates and the birth dates of their children, it was absolutely shotgun style weddings. It’s so interesting to see the societal constructs we adopt and adhere to, and how they shift our perspectives.

That must be truly devastating… I’m so sorry for your grandmother and her mother and grandmother… none of it should have happened that way. Men can be so disgusting. Thank you for bringing it to the light.

It's called childhood marriage in India, which a serious crime under the laws of the country. But it still continues to happen mostly in villages! This must stop. This story also highlights the notion that this is men's world, which is wrong and must change.

I knew this was where it was going when I read the title. Yet, the empathy and tenderness in which this is written softens the very common horror. Great piece Amanda.
